It is one of the most significant works of the traditional Balinese style of architecture, complete with Hindu elements and symbols of independence. The monument was built in 1987 and is the work of Balinese architect Ir Ida Gede Yad. It is based on the traditional Balinese pavilion, known as a bale bengong. The monument is intended to be a place of contemplation and remembrance, and a symbol of the unity of the Indonesian people.
