History of Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park

The Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park history dates back to the late 1900s, which you can learn about during your visit here. The initial construction of the park began in 1992 by the Garuda Kencana Foundation. After much deliberation, it was decided that the large statue of Lord Vishnu would be placed at the Ungasan, a spot that is located high up above the ground and offers views of the entire island. The colossal statue of Lord Vishnu was completed in August 2018, and was inaugurated by the seventh president of Indonesia, Joko Widodo in September of 2018. The entire construction of the park, right from its conceptualisation to its completion, took a little over 28 years, with its design initially being done in 1990 by I Nyoman Nuarta.
