"Where should I stay?" decides more about a Bali trip than any other choice β the island's areas differ so sharply that picking wrong means spending your holiday in traffic. The south coast strip runs from party-centric Kuta through mid-range Legian and upscale Seminyak to surf-and-cafe Canggu; the Bukit peninsula holds resort enclave Nusa Dua, seafood-famous Jimbaran, and clifftop Uluwatu; the east coast offers calm Sanur; and inland, Ubud and highland Kintamani carry the island's cultural and volcanic heart.
Each guide below covers the beaches, hotels, restaurants, and signature experiences of its area, plus honest notes on who it does not suit. Once you have a base, plan outings with the attractions hub and day tours, and sort out how you'll get around β the answer changes area by area.
Seminyak and Kuta are your best bets. Seminyak is more upscale, Kuta is more budget and lively. Legian sits nicely in between.
Culture & nature
Ubud is unmissable for rice terraces, monkey forest, and temples. Kintamani adds volcanic scenery. Easy day trip from any south Bali base.
Families & luxury
Nusa Dua has the calmest beach and the most 5-star hotels. Sanur is great for families without the luxury price tag. Jimbaran is great for seafood sunsets.
Choosing a Bali Area β FAQ
Seminyak or Sanur are the easiest first bases. Seminyak balances beach, restaurants, and nightlife with quick access to Kuta and Canggu; Sanur is calmer, family-friendly, and the departure point for Nusa Penida boats. Many first visits split the stay: four nights south, three nights in Ubud.
Both, if you have a week. Ubud puts rice terraces, the Monkey Forest, and volcano treks on your doorstep but has no beach; the coast delivers surf, sunsets, and nightlife but means 60β90 minute drives to central Bali sights. Splitting the stay avoids the daily commute entirely.
Nusa Dua for calm, swimmable lagoon beaches and resort facilities; Sanur for the same calm sea at lower prices with a car-free beach promenade. Both give easy day-trip access to Bali Zoo, Waterbom, and the safari park.
Canggu for the scene and consistent beach breaks, Uluwatu for world-class reef breaks (Padang Padang, Bingin, Suluban), and Kuta or Legian for beginner-friendly whitewater and cheap surf schools. Keramas, near the safari park, draws experienced surfers to its right-hander.
Budget 20β40 minutes between neighbouring southern areas (KutaβSeminyakβCanggu), 60β90 minutes from the south coast to Ubud, and around two hours to Kintamani or the northwest. Traffic peaks 16:00β19:00; early starts dramatically shorten every trip.
Getting between areas
A private driver lets you stay in one area and explore any part of the island. Grab/Gojek works for short hops. Between south Bali areas: $5β$15 by Grab. Ubud to Seminyak: $25β$35 private driver.
