Getting Around Bali — FAQ

A rental scooter, from about $5 per day including helmet. It is also the fastest way through traffic. You legally need an international driving permit with a motorcycle endorsement, and riding experience matters — Bali traffic is not the place to learn.
A full day (usually 8–10 hours) with an English-speaking driver and air-conditioned car costs from about $35–50 depending on distance, with fuel and parking included. Half-day rates and fixed-price airport transfers are also standard. It is the best-value option for groups of two or more.
Grab and Gojek both operate and work well for short hops in Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Sanur, and Ubud. Some villages and resort zones restrict ride-hailing pickups in favour of local taxi cooperatives, so expect to walk a street or two for a pickup point in those areas.
Self-drive car rental is available from around $25/day, but most visitors are happier hiring a car with driver for a similar total cost — parking is scarce, traffic rules are loosely observed, and a local driver doubles as a navigator and itinerary adviser.
Fixed-rate airport taxis operate from official counters (roughly $10–25 to the main southern areas). Pre-booked private transfers cost about the same and your driver waits at arrivals with a name sign — the least stressful option after a long flight. Grab and Gojek pick up from designated airport zones.
