About Sanur
Sanur is Bali's original beach resort β developed for tourism in the 1960s and 70s, it has a quiet, unhurried charm that contrasts sharply with the frenetic energy of Kuta and Seminyak. The 5km seafront promenade, lined with restaurants and cafes, is one of the most pleasant walks in all of Bali β especially at sunrise when the jukung fishing boats are putting out to sea.
Sanur has two significant strategic advantages that make it worth choosing as a base: it faces east (Bali's only beach with proper sunrises) and it's the main departure point for fast boats to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan β making it the perfect hub for island-hopping itineraries.
Top Things to Do in Sanur
The Sanur Seafront Promenade
Sanur's 5km flat, shaded promenade is perfect for morning walks, cycling (bikes available for rent along the route), and exploring the cafes and warung restaurants that line the beachfront. The promenade connects all the major hotels and is Sanur's most distinctive feature.
Sunrise on Sanur Beach
As Bali's only east-facing beach, Sanur offers the island's most reliable sunrises. The beach is flat, calm (reef-protected), and safe for swimming at all times of year. Morning is when it's at its quietest and most beautiful β fishermen launching boats, local joggers, and an absence of the day-trippers who arrive later.
Fast Boats to Nusa Penida & Lembongan
Sanur Harbour is the main departure point for fast boats to the Nusa islands. Multiple operators run departures from approximately 07:00 to 16:00. The crossing to Nusa Penida takes 30β45 minutes; Nusa Lembongan is 25β35 minutes.

Museum Le Mayeur
Right on the beachfront, the Museum Le Mayeur occupies the former home and studio of Belgian painter Adrien Jean Le Mayeur de Merprès, who lived in Sanur from 1932. The collection of impressionist paintings of Bali and his wife, the famous dancer Ni Pollock, is among the most romantically atmospheric museums on the island.
